Phase 1: Discovery (Months 1-6)—Exploring the Latent Space

Immediately after release, the Bazaar enters discovery mode. Early adopters experiment wildly, probing the model's capabilities and limitations:

The relationship between the two clocks creates a persistent gap—what we might call the capability-mastery gap—that explains many of the frustrations and misunderstandings in contemporary AI discourse.

Why New Releases Feel Simultaneously Revolutionary and Disappointing

When the Cathedral Clock strikes and a new model is released, early experiences are often contradictory:

For individuals trying to navigate this landscape, the capability-mastery gap creates a strategic opportunity—what I'll call the mastery window:

The Window Opens: In the 6-18 months after a major model release, the Cathedral Clock has struck but the Bazaar Clock is still early in its cycle. The model's capabilities are fixed; humanity's mastery is still developing.

The Opportunity: During this window, individuals who invest serious time in exploration and skill-building develop expertise that becomes increasingly valuable as the Bazaar Clock progresses. Early masters of prompt engineering, workflow design, and AI-augmented thinking establish leadership positions.

The Window Closes: By 18-24 months post-release, best practices stabilize, tutorials proliferate, and tools simplify workflows. The mastery that once required exploration now requires only following established playbooks. The skill premium diminishes.

Strategic Takeaway: The highest-leverage moment for skill investment is not Day One of a new release (too chaotic, too little established knowledge), nor is it two years later (too commodified). It's the 6-12 month sweet spot where early patterns are emerging but not yet crystallized.

The most sophisticated question is not "Which clock matters more?" but rather "How do the two clocks interact?"

Disadvantages: Instability in professional integration, difficulty establishing best practices, regulatory frameworks always lag, public confusion about what AI can and cannot reliably do.

Historical Precedent: The personal computer industry in the 1980s-1990s faced similar dynamics—new hardware and software every 12-18 months, with consumers and businesses struggling to keep pace. The "Wintel" standardization eventually created stability, allowing the Bazaar Clock to catch up. AI may need similar standardization.18
